To have a realistic chance of passing an RYA Yachtmaster exam the pre-exam preparation course is usually essential. If you have taken this preparation course recently elsewhere or have another reason why you believe you don't require the preparation please give details below.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Qualifying Passages*
You must have completed 5 x qualifying passages before the exam. The requirement is: 5 x passages over 60 miles measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination, acting as skipper for at least two and two which have involved overnight passages.

Offshore Qualifying Passages Log
Provide a log showing: Yacht (name/type), Departure Port (time/date), Destination (time/date), Distance, Responsibility e.g. crew, mate, navigator, skipper. If you can't provide the log now please send it as soon as possible.

RYA Coastal Yachtmaster Pre-exam Required Logged Experience*
The following minimum experience is required to take this certification: 800 miles in the last 10 years (50% must be on a vessel less than 24m and greater than 7m LWL), 30 days, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper. For holders of RYA Coastal Skipper certificates it's 400 miles, 20 days, 12 night hours and 2 days as skipper.

The following minimum experience is required to take this certification: 2,500 miles in the last 10 years of which 50% must be on a vessel greater then 7m and less than 24m LWL and 50% in tidal waters.

You will be required to complete the course and the exam before the practical course. This course is delivered on-line with support provided by APY. It takes about 50hrs of study and its important not to underestimate the level of effort required to complete this course (for students who are employed it typically takes 4 months). You can start this course at any time by booking the course on the APY website.
RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Certificate

Equivalent Certification*
