RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

 

This course builds on the knowledge learnt on the RYA Day Skipper Theory course and is a prelude to the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course. or RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exams.  This course concentrates on advanced navigation and meteorology skills and is aimed at sailors who are looking to undertake more complex, longer distance passages.

With the move to the RHKYC running our courses, we are in the process of changing our supplier to Ardent Training who we believe will provide a splendid addition to our courses at the RHKYC.  Ardent Training are a team of experienced professional sailors who have built an excellent platform to provide distance learning.

Pre-course Practical Requirements:Sail or motor boat experience up to RYA Day Skipper practical course level.
Pre-course Theory Requirements:Navigational knowledge equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper theory course (unless you can clearly demonstrate ’equivalent knowledge’ and you will have so submit evidence of such knowledge.
Course duration:50 hrs (will depend on an individual’s ability)
Minimum age:16
What’s Included:Charts, RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory course notes book and training almanac.
Exam:At the end of the course you take an on-line exam to complete the course. If you wish to use the course for an MCA Large Yacht qualifications, such as Officer of the Watch or Master 3000, the exam will require invigilating by an RYA Instructor or Examiner. This can be arranged for a fee by ASIA Pacific Yachting.
Award:RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Certificate

Delivered via an on-line web based training course for you to complete at your own speed.

Support is provided by your assigned instructor.

The course is made available for 6 months.  Should you wish to extend that period there is a service charge (see T&Cs for detials)

You will require the following equipment:

  • Access to a computer or tablet device with internet connection.
  • Course plotter and dividers.  If you don’t already have these then they can be purchased separately for APY.

Position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, electronic position finding equipment, taking and interpreting forecasts, plotting weather systems, weather predictions using a barometer and by observation, collision regulations, customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad.

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course or Yachtmaster Exam Preparation course or RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore exam depending on your experience.  Also consider joining a course under the Experience & Mile Building programme to gain valuable experience before your next formal course.
