RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Exam

  • When allocating sleeping cabins they will be assigned to members of the same gender unless a student request an alternative partner.  Cabins are usually assigned in the order of booking with the earliest bookings being allocated the largest cabins.

    Please confirm your if you are over 18 years old.  We do accept younger students but note that there are age limitations on some courses.

    Please give details of any food allergies or special dietary requirements. Please note that we can only cater for basic dietary needs onboard. If you have special requirements we will do our best to cater for those needs, but we may require you to provision some of your own food if we are unable to support your needs.

    Sailing can be physically demanding and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. Please provide details if you have any doubts about your physical ability to complete the course e.g. medical conditions, disability, pregnancy, etc.

    Please provide details of your medical limitations so we can review and advise you on the suitability of the course. 

    I understand this course is taught in English and that I need to be able to converse in English.  Some courses do have Cantonese and Mandarin speaking instructors but this will not be the primary teaching language. 

    COVID-19*

    On joining the course and each time you re-join the course you must be able to present a LeaveHomeSafe App vaccine "Blue Code" pass to access the RHKYC.  To protect and reassure your fellow course members we require all participants to take a RAT test on the morning before joining the course and present the negative response to the course trainer on arrival.  Failure to abide by these requirements will result in your place being forfeited and no refund will be given.

    RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Practical Requirements

    The following minimum experience is required to take this certification: 800 miles in the last 10 years (50% must be on a vessel less than 24m and greater than 7m LWL), 30 days, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper. For holders of RYA Coastal Skipper certificates it's 400 miles, 20 days, 12 night hours and 2 days as skipper.

    RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Practical Requirements

    The following minimum experience is required to take this certification: 2,500 miles in the last 10 years (50% must be on a vessel greater then 7m and less than 24m LWL) and 50% in tidal waters.  In addition, you need 5 passages separately logged with details over 60 miles logged measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages.  All 5 passages must have been completed on a vessel less than 24m and 200gt.

    Upload your logbook to provide evidence that you have logged the required pre-exam experience.  This can be either a scan of a hard copy or electronic logbook.  If you don't currently have a logbook then you will need to make one up retrospectively to at least demonstrate you have the minimum experience required.  If you need a logbook template click this link: Logbook Template.

    Depending on the course you selected there are certain mandatory certificates required before you take the Coastal Skipper practical course or Yachtmaster exam.

    We require all candidates to hold the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore theory course completion certificate (or equivalent) before their exam to confirm they have met the requirement to have they knowledge up to this standard.

    Upload your First Aid certificate (must be in date when undertaking the exam)

    It's possible to examine up to 2 candidates in a 24hr period starting at approximately 1000hrs and finishing the next day.  Note that candidates will need to supply at least 2 crew members to join the exam (max 5 onboard) to make up a suitable yacht crew.

    • The yacht must be suitable for the exam. Consult with APY before making this selection.

    If two candidates the yacht hire cost will be split.  Hence, the second candidate must select the same in their booking.

    Exam candidates will need to supply the crew food and drink during the exam.  It's part of the exam to demonstrate you can supply the yacht and look after your crew.
