World Sailing/RYA Offshore Personal Safety & Survival Course

For all World Sailing Category 1 offshore yacht races at least 50% of a crew (including the skipper) shall have undertaken the Offshore Personal Safety & Survival training.  APY runs this courses on behalf of the Hong Kong Sailing Federation. Successful participants will receive a World Sailing certificate that will last for five years before further safety training is necessary.  This certificate will be accepted at other regattas where there is such a requirement.

Pre-course Practical Requirements:The pool session can be physically demanding and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness e.g. 2 hrs of pool drills such as swimming in restrictive clothing, independent boarding of a liferaft, righting a liferaft, etc. All students must complete the pool exercises in order to receive a World Sailing certificate. Please contact APY if you have any doubts about your physical ability to complete the course e.g. physical limitations, medical conditions, pregnancy, etc.
Pre-course Theory Requirements:Full course: None

Refresher course: Currently hold an World Sailing/RYA Offshore Personal Safety/Survival course certificate not more than 4 years past the expiry date on the first day of the course and issued in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong or by the RYA

Minimum age:16 years. Under 18 year old will only be accepted if accompanied by a responsible adult.

What’s Not Included:1. Lunch (strongly recommend to bring a packed lunch as time is restricted)

2. Wet weather protective clothing suitable for offshore.

3. Gas inflatable lifejacket (not buoyancy aid) that meets the ISO 12402-3 standard i.e:

- Gas inflation (manual or automatic).

- Leg/crutch straps.

Students not having access to a suitable offshore clothing or lifejacket can hire these from APY (can be add to order when booking the course).

Cost:Full course HKD 3,400 for HKSF personal members, HKSF associated club or HKSF affiliated associations and HKD 3,900 for non-HKSF members.

Refresher Course HKD 2,500 for HKSF personal members, HKSF associated club or HKSF affiliated associations and HKD 2,900 for non-HKSF members.

Exam:Multiple choice questions in English and Cantonese.

Full Course (2 Days)

Day 1

  • Course Registration @ 0850hrs.  It’s essential that all students arrive on time for the course registration or you will be deemed not to have attended the full course.
  • Course Starts @ 0900hrs.
  • Lunch @ 1200hrs to 1245hrs.
  • Day Ends @ 1700hrs.

Day 2

  • Course Registration @ 0850hrs.  It’s essential that all students arrive on time for the course registration or you will be deemed not to have attended the full course.
  • Pool Session @ 0900hrs to 1200hrs.
  • Lunch and Pool Session Debrief @ 1200hrs to 1230hrs.
  • Exam @ 1600hrs.
  • Course Ends @ 1700hrs.

Refresher Course (1 Day)

  • Course Registration @ 0820hrs.  It’s essential that all students arrive on time for the course registration or you will be deemed not to have attended the full course.
  • Course Starts @ 0830hrs.
  • Lunch @ 1200hrs to 1245hrs.
  • Day Ends @ 1730hrs.

Students must bring on the morning of the 2nd day for the 2nd day course or the 1st day of the 1 day course:

1. Wet weather protective clothing suitable for offshore.
2. Gas inflatable lifejacket (not buoyancy aid) that meets the ISO 12402-3 standard i.e:

  • 150N Gas inflation (manual or automatic).
  • Leg/crutch straps.

Students not having access to a suitable offshore clothing or lifejacket can hire these from APY (can be add to order when booking the course).

If a student brings along clothing or a lifejacket not meeting the requirements above they will be required to hire the equipment from APY before they can proceed with the pool session.
